Quarles says he'd be interested in a UT job
By Dave Hooker

ORLANDO, Fla. — Maryville High School football coach George Quarles said he’s talked casually to Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer about a position with the Vols.

Quarles said he’d be interested in being a position coach but didn’t think Fulmer, who has four offensive coaching vacancies to fill, wants to hire a high school coach.

“I’d certainly be interested,” Quarles said.

Quarles said he’s not interested in being a graduate assistant, which he’s also discussed with Fulmer.

Quarles, who just won his seventh class 4A state championship in the last eight seasons, is one of five finalists up for coach of the year honors, which will be presented by organizers of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Friday evening.

“It would be a huge honor,” Quarles said from San Antonio. “I’m not counting on it. Just to be a finalist is pretty special. It would be a great honor for Maryville high school.”

Quarles is coaching the East quarterbacks in the high school all-star event. He’s been particularly impressed with Jeannette (Pa.) High School quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who is widely considered one of the top prospects in the nation.

“He’s the best athlete I’ve ever been around,” Quarles said.

Pryor was once considering UT until offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe decided to take the Duke head coaching job. Now, the Vols are out of the running and Pryor is primarily considering Michigan, Florida and Ohio State.
